Multimedia Project
Proposal – Connor Sweeney/Rhys Bennett
For our chosen topic we have decided to demonstrate the use
of the Unreal Game Engine in current video game technology and discuss how it
has evolved over the years from a simple design to the current standard in
modern gaming engines. For example on the Playstation and Xbox consoles with
games such as Devil May Cry, Unreal Tournament, Bioshock, Splinter Cell etc. We
are going to demonstrate the engine with gameplay of different games that use
the engine and discuss why it is one of the most used for game engines in this
day and age. The reason we have chosen this is because gaming has become a
regular practice for general recreational activity as well as it being one of
the biggest things in multimedia today. We are going to demonstrate the
technology by testing games that have been used by this particular engine with
a Playstation 3 or and Xbox 360. By testing it ourselves it will give us an
accurate idea of what the technology is like and why people use it. The reason
we are going to use either of these tools is because they are some of the
leading consoles that are being used within this type of media today. People of
all ages find them quite engaging and easy to use for single or multiplayer
depending on the type of game being played. A Pc may also be considered as it
is also another platform that uses the unreal engine although a lot of people
find it difficult to use in terms of its user interface, but that just falls to
individual opinion. Now here is a little information on this particular piece
of multimedia to give you a flavour about what the presentation and report will
be like.
The Unreal Game Engine debuted in 1998 and has gone through
4 different versions since that first release. While primarily used in the
beginning for first person shooter games like Unreal Tournament and Killing
Floor it moved on and was utilised in 3rd person games and others besides this.
It was used for skateboarding games, adventure games and sports games primarily
and still is to this day. This engine is also regularly used for modding video
games and helping to create newer fan made video games to be shared on the
internet. Also many universities have a license which allows gaming students
the opportunity to learn using the technology and allow these people to create
and explore using this engine. The engine also has many uses besides video
games. For example the FBI have licensed it so it can be used in simulation
training at bases training new FBI agents so it can give them more of an idea
about real world situations. Also its been used on television shows like the
kids T.V show Lazytown as a backdrop to the whole show so they didn’t have to
use sets and spend extra money.
Overall this is a vital game engine which continues to adapt
and change the environment of the gaming landscape. We intend to show this off
to you and allow you to see why its such a vital piece of multimedia in todays
modern gaming society.
